What is a PCP?
A primary care provider (PCP) is a doctor that treats common medical problems. We assign every member a PCP when you enroll in our health plan. This doctor meets state requirements and is trained to give you medical care.
Why do I need to see my PCP?
Your PCP is familiar with you and your medical history. Regular visits with your PCP are important for your health. Your PCP will:
- Give preventive care, wellness visits and health advice
- Teach you healthy habits
- Check for and treat non-emergency health concerns
- Refer you to a specialist, when needed
When do I need to see my PCP?
You will usually see your PCP for yearly check-ups and most of your regular healthcare needs. They can help you with any non-emergency health problems you are having. Non-emergencies are concerns that are not serious or life-threatening, such as:
• Colds, cough, flu, mild fever
• Sprain or strain
• Minor cuts, bruises or burns
• Upset stomach, vomiting or diarrhea
• Joint and back pain
• Minor asthma attack
• Mild allergic reaction
• Ear infection
• Pink eye
• Side effects to medicine
• Running out of your medicine
What if I need help from another doctor who focuses on a specific type of care?
If you need to see a doctor other than your PCP (like a specialist), your PCP can refer you to other doctors who focus on the care that you need.
Please note: Please do not visit the other doctor without an OK from your PCP. You may need to get a referral (approval) from your PCP.
Can I change my PCP?
Yes, you can choose a different PCP if you do not want to use the PCP we assigned you. You’ll need to choose a PCP that is in the Magellan Complete Care network. You can visit MCCofFL.com or call us at 1-800-327-8613 (TTY 711) to find a new PCP that is in our network.
How do I choose the right PCP?
Choosing the right PCP is important. Although the PCP that you decide to use is your choice, here are a few questions that you can ask yourself to help you choose the PCP that is best for you.
- Can the PCP explain and speak to me in a language that I can understand?
- Do I want a PCP who is friendly or more formal?
- Is the PCP’s office close to my home or work?
- Does the PCP’s office hours work with my schedule?
- Does the office staff return calls in a timely manner? Are they friendly?
- Is it easy to contact this PCP? Do they have different ways that I can contact them?
- Do I want a PCP that can offer me special services? What are their areas of interest?
- What are the latest reviews/ feedback from others about this PCP?
- Does the PCP give me enough time to ask questions?
- Do they answer all of my health questions?
What if the doctor that I would like to use is not in the Magellan Complete Care network?
If a PCP that you would like to use is not in our network, let us know! We can reach out to him or her and ask if they want to join our network.
What is a network?
Doctors and hospitals that work with a health plan are called a network. You can find our full list of providers in our network through Magellan Complete Care’s online provider directory. We can also mail a copy of the provider directory to you if you need it.
What should I do if my PCP is not available or if their office is closed?
If you need help right away and cannot wait until the next available day to see your PCP, please go to an urgent care center near you. You can find your local urgent care center through our online provider directory at MCCofFL.com or by calling us at 1-800-327-8613 (TTY 711).
If your health problem is serious or life-threatening, call 911 or go to the nearest emergency room.
